The petition also accuses her of theft from the Crook County Treasurer’s Office vault, a c...

  • Public voices support for siren

    Sep 16, 2021

Every member of the Sundance City Council has heard feedback over the last month on one specific issue: the possibility of scrapping the noon siren. From the strong reaction of the community, it seems that a sizeable chunk of the community opposes the idea to get rid of the daily test. The suggestion was made at last month's meeting by Emergency Management Coordinator Ed Robinson, who is concerned that it, "Breeds complacency with your general public." After a while, people start to tune the...

Kaminski is also familiar to the community through his service as a deputy with the Crook County Sheriff's Office. The city has long followed the protocol of obtaining a permit from Wyoming Game & Fish to cull a certain number of deer. However, the cull was not performed last year and, "In missing a year, they got ahead of us,"...

  • Peek at the Past

    Sep 16, 2021

1 Years Ago Sept. 22, 1921 The deer season opened in Wyoming last Friday and continues until Oct. 15. The outlook for snow right now is not as good as it might be to suit the hunter, but probably some will try their luck anyway and those are the ones who must immediately get next to one provision of the state law which makes it mandatory to "wear tied about his hat or cap a handkerchief or cloth of bright red color – not less than 18 inches square." Speaking to the Times about this phase of t...

  • The West is burning and politics are fanning the flames

    Cynthia Lummis, U.S. Senator|Sep 16, 2021

As smoke from summer Western wildfires spreads all the way to Maine, the entire country finally realizes what the West has long known: America’s forest-management policies are not working. This record-breaking fire season has seen more than 5 million acres burn in 81 large fires across 10 states. California’s Dixie Fire has torched more than 700 homes and now totals nearly 1 million acres. It is approaching the size of Rhode Island. Oregon’s Bootleg Fire is now so large it’s generating its own weather, including lightning. In my home state o...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 16, 2021

As the old joke goes, the time has come for everyone in Wyoming to start locking the doors of their vehicles, because zucchini season is here. This is certainly close to the truth for my next-door-neighbors, who have been hauling armfuls of tomatoes indoors for weeks. Those neighbors are, for the sake of clarity, my parents-in-law, whose newly created vegetable patch has transformed into a veritable jungle. Hiding among plants that are now as tall as trees, Mom-in-Law has managed to grow the lar...

  • City to challenge census results

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 16, 2021

Has Sundance really lost an eighth of its population over the last ten years? The city council doesn’t think so, and now aims to challenge the results of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 redistricting data. The data was released a month ago and stated that Sundance saw a significant reduction in population from 1182 to 1032 between the years of 2010 and 2019. This loss of 150 citizens represents a 12.7% decline. Sundance was not alone – of the municipalities in Crook County, all but Pine Haven saw a decline. The county itself, however, saw a mod...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 16, 2021

A franchise fee agreement between Range Communications and the City of Sundance will be staying on hold until November to allow time for the council to consider the cooperative’s request for an exemption that would recognize its financial contribution to the city by only collecting the fee for half the time the agreement is active. Chief Government Relations Officer Jason Hendricks attended the meeting to speak for a second time with council members prior to the third and final reading of the ordinance enacting a franchise fee with Range. Franc...

  • Council passes storage container ordinance

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 16, 2021

At Tuesday’s meeting, an ordinance amending the City of Sundance’s rules for storage containers and billboards received its third and final reading. Though final approval had been scheduled for August’s meeting, the issue was tabled to allow time to finalize the wording. With the new rule in place, shipping containers are still allowed within the industrial zone of the city. However, while the ordinance does allow portable moving containers and moving pods “used for moving and temporary use” outside the industrial zone, they may only remain fo...
