  • Lanowners warned of sly buying practices

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 25, 2022

If you feel strongly that your ranch should forever remain a part of the agricultural community, the Crook County Assessor’s Office is recommending caution at this time if you are approached by a potential buyer. All might not be as it seems, say Theresa Curren and Tracey Jundt, who recently handled what they describe as an eyecatching purchase on behalf of a development company. The incident involved a 720-acre ranch within the county. The owners were approached by a developer with an offer to buy the land. “There are a lot of ranchers who...

  • Election results approved

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 25, 2022

The results of last week’s primary election have been verified and confirmed by the county canvassing board, according to County Clerk Melissa Jones. No recounts were necessary and no issues emerged during the process. “We had no automatic recounts and we had no provisional ballots that we had to go through,” says Jones. “Everything went smoothly for us.” It wasn’t that the primary didn’t have some very close races – the two candidates for Pine Haven’s mayor, for example, received exactly the same number of votes at 113 each....

With invasive zebra mussels now known to be present nearby, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGF) has developed a rapid response plan specific to Wyoming water bodies including Keyhole Reservoir. Meanwhile, watercraft owners have been reminded to clean, drain and dry their boats before moving between bodies of water and are asked to ensure they follow all the regulations for AIS inspections. According to Game & Fish, invasive zebra and quagga mussels have not yet been found in Wyoming. However, the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and...

  • Rally traffic busier than it seemed

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 25, 2022

Downtown Sundance may have seemed quieter than it has in past years on Wyoming Wednesday, but were there really fewer visitors at this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally? Yes and no. According to the official numbers from the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), traffic across the official ten days of rally was up 1.1% from the five-year average, but was down 5.3% from last year. A total of 497,835 vehicles were counted by SDDOT during this year’s rally, a process that’s done by placing portable road tube counters at all nine...

The event was held at the gate to the tower with 98 classics, some true to the original and others considerably upgraded. Each vehicle had a story at this show, such as one about a rig built of friendship and love as one of the bucket list items completed by the Orr family before the death of one of their own. "My dad and my uncle built it for my uncle's retirement out of the service back...

100 Years Ago August 24, 1922 Dick Stone of Gillette is in receipt of a letter from Arno B. Cammerer, acting director of the Department of the Interior., in which Mr. Cammerer states that the sum of $400 has been appropriated for erection of a shelter cabin at the base of the Tower. In view of the greatly increased tourist traffic these days to the Tower, this will prove to be a great convenience. At the present, the Tower can be reached only by the fording of the Belle Fourche river, which is a dangerous and sometimes impossible feat in these...

  • Monkeypox arrives in Wyoming

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 25, 2022

Monkeypox has officially arrived in Wyoming, according to the Wyoming Department of Health. However, the virus is not considered to be a high risk for most people. “Because monkeypox spreads through close, intimate contact we do not believe the risk for the virus is now a higher concern for the local community or for most people in Wyoming,” said Dr. Alexia Harrist, state health officer. “Monkeypox does not spread easily like familiar viruses such as influenza or COVID-19.” The case was identified in an adult man who resides in Laramie...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 25, 2022

I’ve always been impressed with Wyoming’s dedication to its natural resources. Hearing about our local tree farmers, looking at side-by-side photographs of the Black Hills now and in the time of Custer, reading about mine reclamations and efforts to revitalize areas hit by fire – these are not concepts I’d really thought about before I moved here. Even the fact that the Forest Service’s efforts to update its management plan has led to a little controversy only speaks to me of this...
