This year's fair concluded over the weekend with the annual parade through Sundance, following this year's theme of "unmasking the outlaws, bandits and thieves and stealing the show." Spectators lined up to wave and watch as horses, vehicles, musicians and more made their way along Main Street. The parade brought to an end another successful week of animal shows and entertainment. County Treasurer Mary Kuhl will no longer have access to the credit cards used within the Crook County Treasurer’s Office. The county commissioners moved on Monday morning to cancel the old cards and have new ones issued, with Acting Treasurer Tammy Jundt listed as the authorized user. This decision was made following the arrest of Kuhl last week on charges related to her conduct while in office. Crook is among the counties nationwide in which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is once again recommending everyone should wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status. The new guidance also recommends that students, teachers and staff in K-12 schools return to wearing masks. The guidance is based on community transmission of COVID-19. The number of mills to be levied in this county has not changed this year, though the county’s valuation has once again slightly increased. This, said County Assessor Theresa Curren on Monday, is why the amount each entity will receive this fiscal year has gone up. This year’s valuation, as fixed by the state board, is $220,612,930. A fatal crash occurred south of Sundance on Sunday. Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating driver fatigue as the possible cause. The crash took place at around milepost nine on Wyoming 116. Troopers were notified at approximately 5:36 a.m. of a one-vehicle rollover involving a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche. The vehicle was reportedly heading north when it crossed into the southbound lane, exited the left side of the road and overturned. The driver has been identified as Shon D. Shon Del Engel, 41 of Upton, Wyoming, passed away August 1, 2021, in a car accident. Born in Sundance, Wyoming, December 27, 1979, to Keith and Gayle Engel of Upton, joining his siblings, Kelly, Jim and Lora. Shon went to school K-12 in Upton where he met and has kept his lifelong friends. He loved his craft as a skilled equipment operator working both in California and Wyoming over the past 23 years. 1 Years Ago August 11, 1921 J.W. Caskaden, for thirty years a resident of Crook County, left Friday for his old home in West Virginia. For the last nine years he has made his home on a sheep wagon, being employed by John McKean. Grant Bay of Hulett was a caller at this office Thursday and left a sample of Yellow Transparent that were grown on his ranch ten miles north of Hulett. The Devils Tower Natural History Association (DTNHA) is looking for new board members to replace the three present directors whose terms will be coming to an end this fall. Christopher Elman of Arizona will serve up to ten years on charges related to an incident last year in which he led law enforcement on a high-speed chase along I-90, crossing the border into South Dakota and eventually crashing his vehicle near Spearfish. Travis Price of Sundance has been sentenced to up to 40 years for two felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. He was originally accused of 13 individual felony charges related to sexual abuse of a minor. He pled guilty on two of the charges. A Beulah man has been arrested on felony possession charges and for domestic battery. On July 19, a Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a possible domestic in Beulah. He arrived to find a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper had already responded and was able to advise it was an active domestic; he requested Sundance Ambulance respond to the scene. The last of three Minnesota residents who were arrested last year after a large amount of marijuana was found in their vehicle during a traffic stop has been sentenced. Judgement has been deferred for Antaysia Bolton, who must now complete three years of supervised probation.
