  • City seeks AML funding for water project

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

The City of Sundance is looking to secure Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) funding for the next project on its list to upgrade and improve the water system. At an estimated cost of $1.6 million, the project would replace two tanks and upgrade two existing lines that travel from them under the interstate, improving water pressure in the south zone. The project was identified as part of the level one master study performed in 2013 in conjunction with Wyoming Water Development. Other projects from the st...

  • High garbage volumes may force "additional dumpster" fee

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

High volumes of garbage are being collected from around town this summer, the Sundance City Council heard on Tuesday. This is partly due to the Oneok pipeline construction currently taking place, which has brought a lot of activity and heavy usage from businesses such as the hotels and campgrounds. Demand has been so high, said Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz, that CW Waste is performing two pick-ups per week just to keep up, while businesses are calling City Hall to request more trash cans. This is...

  • City animal carcass program in jeopardy

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

Rule changes may force Sundance to call time on its dead animal waste composting program, the council heard last week. At the request of Council Member Joe Wilson, representatives from the DEQ will be asked to visit Sundance to clarify its rules and discuss options for the city. Public Works Director Mac Erickson explained the problem at Tuesday’s meeting of the council: the DEQ now wants dead animal waste to be placed on an impervious surface and the leachate collected and taken either to the lagoon or a lined pond. The new rules are not c...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

A project to improve accessibility at Devils Tower National Monument is on the near horizon, says Superintendent Amnesty Kochanowski. The work will aim to make the popular site more accessible and safer for visitors and will concentrate on the main areas of visitor use within the park. The project is just about to go out to bid, Kochanowski says, and the intention is to break ground in September. The work will include renovation of both parking lots to add more handicap-accessible parking lots and improve the sidewalks to make access to the...

  • Forest Service updates on projects

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

District Ranger Mike Gosse provided an update on current Forest Service activities to the county commissioners last week, beginning with the Cook Lake dam project that began on Monday. The new concrete dam that is to be installed will withstand a 200-year flood event, he said, which is a definite improvement on the old, failing dam that has been in place for 60 years. When questioned as to the stability of the site – bearing in mind that one of the largest landslides in the county is hanging o...

  • Peek at the Past

    Jul 11, 2019

1 Years Ago The Times July 9, 1919 Many of our people are naturally much interested in the time when actual construction work will begin on the Sundance-Beulah section of state highway. County Commissioner Thompson states the contract provides that work shall begin July 15, but some misunderstand with regard to the right-of-way had developed and it appears now unlikely perhaps that the operations can be started in the time. It is said a wild west show of some proportions and necessity will be pulled off at the old B Bar ranch in Red Canyon ne...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

Even a creature with no voice has something to teach, as I’ve had reason to acknowledge over the last couple of weeks. This is the tale of the little plant that could and the gardener who never had before – and don’t worry, it has a happy ending. I don’t have a great track record with growing things on this side of the ocean. Back in Ol’ Blighty, I’ve been known to coax a carrot or two from the ground and I once raised enough runner beans to feed the whole street on a specially made bamboo trel...

  • Card of Thanks

    Jul 11, 2019

The loss of our son, Joshua, has been terrible but the outpouring of support has been a light in the darkness. We do not know many of those that have helped us as we have found anonymous donations of food in our freezer and there were many donations of cookies for Joshua’s service. We also appreciate all the donations to the Women’s Resource Center in memory of Joshua. Thank you for all your support. Love, Doug, Jessica and Sam Don... Full story

CASPER — A man accused of kidnapping a child from a south Casper apartment complex on Wednesday — and then eluding police for 24 hours — now faces up to life in prison. Prosecutors on Friday afternoon filed three felony charges against Joshua Hicks, 32, who, authorities have said, abducted a young girl on Wednesday morning from a lawn near Southwest Wyoming Boulevard and sexually abused her. He then dropped her in the area of the apartment building and left in a truck, according to a series of news releases police issued in connecting to the c...

The subadult female black bear that lost her life regularly trolled developed parts of Jenny and String lakes, an area that has seen regular summertime conflict in recent years despite efforts to educate visitors not to feed the bears. “We did intend to relocate it,” Grand Teton National Park spokeswoman Denise Germann said. “Bu...

  • Peddler permits face the axe

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

Whether from a large tent or a tiny stand, any vendor who wishes to sell their wares during Rally Wednesday has historically been asked to pay a peddler permit fee. This, said Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz on Tuesday, is $110 for the day itself and an additional $110 for the surrounding days, which could equal more than the profit a small vendor hopes to make. Lenz asked the Sundance City Council to consider scrapping this fee and switch over to the $10 special event permit that is used for other events in town, such as the Sundance Winter...

  • City improves ISO rating by one point

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jul 11, 2019

Improvements within the volunteer fire department and the City of Sundance’s efforts to loop its water system to provide fire flow have led to an upgrade in the city’s ISO rating, said Fire Chief Chris Tomford last week. Sundance has increased its rating from a seven to a six following the results of a recent evaluation. An ISO rating is created by the Insurance Services Office and applies to fire departments and their surrounding communities. The rating can affect insurance rates within that community, so the aim is to secure the lowest num...

During the course of the evening we will “visit” a number of “residents” of the cemetery, relate their biographies and share stories or memories about them – at Mt. Moriah we will “meet” Corporal Ira Smith Gordon, John and Annie Johnson...

    Jul 11, 2019

Vesicular Stomatitis (VSV)-Indiana serotype has recently been found in horses in Texas, New Mexico and, most recently, Colorado. Because of this, Wyoming State Veterinarian Dr. Jim Logan has implemented a 72-hour health certificate requirement on susceptible livestock being imported from any county where VSV has been diagnosed in the previous 30 days. This requirement is effective immediately. Additionally, livestock originating from a state or area where VSV has been diagnosed must have the following statement recorded on the Certificate of...
