  • Introducing...

    Jun 24, 2021

The official grand opening of Old Stoney and Sundance Square took place over the weekend, beginning with a traditional cornerstone dedication courtesy of the Wyoming Grand Lodge AF&AM (below). As well-wishers enjoyed refreshments and toured the facility, the Sundance Area Chamber of Commerce followed with its own ceremony an hour later, this one involving a ribbon cutting for the city’s new cultural center. The next day saw Sundance Square enjoy its own celebration, with a farmers’ market wel...

The fire was reported on the afternoon of June 16 at around 2 p.m. and quickly reached 100 acres in size. Approximately 60 residents in the northwest part of Pine Haven were evacuated and asked to voluntarily r...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 24, 2021

A full fire ban went into effect across Crook County on Thursday when the county commissioners met to consider the request from Fire Warden Doug Leis and approve the associated ordinance. Due to the high fire danger and the number of fires that local volunteers have tackled over the past couple of weeks, the commission agreed that the restrictions should begin the same day. The resolution also recommends that the cities and towns within Crook County and the federal agencies managing the forests, Devils Tower National Monument and BLM follow sui...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 24, 2021

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, a local by the name of John Rogers decided this county needed its own bank, and that he was the man to make it happen. This week, Sundance State Bank invites the community to celebrate its 125th anniversary with a customer appreciation BBQ and street dance. The bank that shares its name with this city first opened in 1895 and was chartered to the state in October, 1905. “The community was just forming and it was people like [Rogers] who came in and h...

1 Years Ago June 23, 1921 E.M. Harper and R.O. Krenk helped organize a farm bureau at Tower school house last week, J.P. Solomon being chosen chairman and D.W. Kelley, secretary. There was a large attendance and much interest shown. Plans are now well underway for an old-time celebration in Sundance on Monday, July 4. The ball game is expected to be a drawing card, as Sundance Inside will play the Outside. The Sundance boys have been unlucky in their attempts to beat neighboring teams and now they will have a chance to beat each other. At...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 24, 2021

Dear Editor, I am responding to the Letter to the Editor published on June 17 from Ernie Reinhold. This is perhaps the most nonsensical letter ever published in The Sundance Times. Somehow, Mr. Reinhold has equated being pro-life with the requirement to be a democratic socialist. He’s hit on all the major talking points of the Left: free child care, free education (meaning college of course), free lifelong healthcare and a guaranteed good paying job. Oh, and higher taxes of course. Clever talking points but it won’t work on anyone who can see...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 24, 2021

When you’re running one of the most popular sport tournaments on the planet but it’s been delayed by a year because everyone keeps getting sick, what’s the best way to make sure people are watching when you finally get round to kick-off? If you’re a European soccer association, it’s apparently by making sure there’s nothing remotely normal about the event. It’s not that Euro 2021 has been scheduled at strange times or is being held in an odd location – it’s business as usual for the basics. It’s...

  • July 4 events to support firefighters

    Jun 24, 2021

Recent fires in the region have prompted the Devils Tower KOA to cancel its annual fireworks display, scheduled for July 4. Owner Ogden Driskill said, “We are proud of the great fireworks show we put on each year, but it’s just too dry and there is too much at risk. We are shifting gears and working to support the firefighters and first responders with a benefit.” While the sky may not be filled with bright bursts of color, the party will go on. Driskill says the Devils Tower KOA management team has organized a plethora of events for the fourt...

  • Military headstone mystery solved

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 24, 2021

There was significant response from the public to news that a mysterious pile of military tombstones had been found on the hill next to Beulah, says Vernon Davis of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. Initially, there was concern that the eight stones had been stolen, but the mystery has now been solved and the ending is a happy one. “It was a pretty simple story actually,” Davis says. “When the Sheriff’s Office took the stones over to the National Cemetery, they discovered they were damaged stones.” It’s unlikely that we’ll ever discover how...
