  • Class of 2020

    May 21, 2020

It was a ceremony like no other for the graduating class of 2020, as families gathered in their vehicles to watch as seniors accepted their diplomas. At top, the 29 seniors don caps and gowns to listen to speeches from salutatorian Josiah Rudloff, valedictorian Teddi Marchant, Principal Jim O’Connor and Superintendent Mark Broderson. At left, above and below, the streets were lined with well-wishers as the community turned out to celebrate its seniors as they followed the parade route through t...

  • Restrictions ease as more deaths announced

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

As new orders go into effect that will further reduce the restrictions imposed on Wyoming’s businesses and citizens, and the legislature announces progress from its two-day special session, the state recorded three more deaths from the novel coronavirus this week. The first of the three reported deaths occurred in Fremont County over the weekend. The older, hospitalized woman was described by the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) as having existing conditions that put her at higher risk of serious illness related to the virus. Two more d... Full story

  • County faces drop in revenue

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

A decline in income for businesses across the county is likely to affect this year’s budget decisions, the Crook County Commissioners heard on Wednesday. In the meantime, departments will be asked to reduce their expenditure as much as possible over the next couple of months to address a projected shortage in revenue from tax sources. At one point, said County Clerk Linda Fritz at a special meeting, the county budget was $1.7 million short, which was enough to cause “heart failure”. Fortunately, in putting all the pieces of the budget toget...

Deadlines are approaching for Wyoming’s outdoorsmen to submit this year’s applications for fall hunting. Apply soon to secure opportunities to hunt elk, deer, antelope, sandhill crane, beaver and fall turkey, as well as the Springer and Glendo special pheasan...

  • Legislative Update

    Tyler Lindholm, House District 1 Representative|May 21, 2020

n the nation, and in like fashion the Wyoming Legislature met for two days to begin the job of taking our State back. I traveled to Cheyenne for this special session, even though we could participate from home. Much like many of you, I feel that these times are too important to stay home and hope that I would be as effective remotely. In doing so, I also felt it was important to stay away from people, social distance and constantly wash my hands. Both days were filled with debate, it almost...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

I married into one of the kindest families in the county, but that doesn’t make them immune to the occasional gentle mockery. There’s one habit I brought to these shores that my loved ones find an endless source of amusement. To me, it’s a perfectly normal thing to do, and not doing it makes no sense. To them, it’s an unnecessary amount of work. I am speaking of dining etiquette; specifically, the fact that I cannot eat a meal without the aid of a knife. I’ve been eating this way since I w...

  • Legislature aims to assist small businesses

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

For the first time since 2004, the Wyoming Legislature met in special session on Friday with the goal of figuring out how to spend the $1.25 billion received through the CARES Act. Businesses impacted by the pandemic will have access to a suite of stipend programs to replenish lost income and cover COVID-19 related costs – and will also be protected from lawsuits related to the pandemic. Three bills were passed during the special two-day session that began on Friday, all of which were designed to address issues associated with the COVID-19 p...

  • State orders require changes to local polling places

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

Many of Crook County’s registered voters will experience a change to their regular election routine this year. To comply with state orders regarding social distancing, County Clerk Linda Fritz plans to change several polling locations. “Our goal here is to have elections as normal as possible,” said Secretary of State Ed Buchanan last week as he unveiled the directives that will alter this year’s primary and general. The idea of introducing variations on the polling places normally used, he said, is “to try to maintain social distancin...

  • Talking it out

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 21, 2020

With some frank discussion, feedback from the commissioners and sage advice from the county attorney, Crook County Weed & Pest Board members appear to have set aside their differences. Issues surfaced between board members at the beginning of the month, when board member Wade Dennis brought a complaint to the county commissioners. He felt there had been a “serious breakdown in the chain of command between the board and the supervisor”. Dennis said he felt board members had chosen to act as the Weed & Pest supervisor themselves, directly violati...

  • Eyes to the sky

    May 21, 2020

All eyes were to the sky on Friday morning as a Wyoming Air National Guard 153rd Airlift Wing C-130 passed over the Crook County Memorial Hospital, low enough that one could almost make out the markings on the plane’s tail with the naked eye. C-130s took part in the flyover, which began in Lusk and ended in Cheyenne, taking in hospitals across Wyoming as an aerial salute to healthcare professionals on the frontlines during the pandemic....
