  • Trial by fake fire

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 5, 2022

Had it been a real fire, the first mistake could have been fatal. The fire was fake, but the adrenaline was not. This year's all-county firefighter training was based around a digital simulation authentic enough to summon a sense of urgency similar to one that might be sparked by an actual wildland fire. "We want to be as realistic as we can, just short of having smoke in the building – and if we could figure out how to do that, we would," says Jeremy Dedic of Wyoming State Forestry, which l...

  • Trial date set in Svoboda murder case

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 5, 2022

A trial date has been scheduled for Ed Svoboda, a Crook County man who stands accused of murdering his wife in September, 2021. Svoboda has pled not guilty by reason of mental illness. A date could not be set following Svoboda’s arraignment in March due to the necessity for an examination of his mental condition, which the prosecution and defense agreed should be performed at the Wyoming State Hospital. A backlog at the hospital had at that time already caused timing issues in this case. Svoboda’s attorney, P. Craig Silva, stated during the...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 5, 2022

Do you think we might be safe from any more blizzarding? I’ve had quite enough of it for one year after spending three times the expected number of hours on muddling my way home from a long-awaited visit to the UK. More about that trip later, because right now the thing I want to do most is have a good, old-fashioned complain. Not about the heroes in snowplows – basically the only reason I made it home to write this – or the impossibly brave linesmen and first responders who clamber throu...

Her complaint comes as Laramie County Republicans face the prospect of losing most o...

GILLETTE (WNE) — The coal production from Peabody Energy Corp. and Arch Resources Inc. through the first three months of 2022 aligned with the strong projections each company had for their Powder River Basin mines headed into the year, despite rail issues and other logistical challenges. Their steady coal production comes amid an increased demand for thermal coal sold at higher prices that has carried over from last year. But both companies have kept an eye on the short-term gains with the other fixed on the looming long-term downfall of the c...

The suggestions — which range from requiring a dispersed camping sticker for campers to implementing a year-round 14-day stay limit — are all intended to address some common issues with dispersed camping, or camping outside of a designated campground, said Bighorn National Forest recreation staff officer Andrea Maichak. These issues include overcrowding and lack of av...
