  • Public Works calls for feedback on recycling program

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 15, 2021

Before the City of Sundance makes a decision on the future of its recycling, Public Works Director Mac Erickson is looking to gather input from as many residents as possible. Should the program continue exactly as it is, with weekly curbside pickups, or is it time to do something different? “We’ve seen a big decrease in recycling. In wintertime it does decrease quite a bit anyway but it just doesn’t seem like we’ve been getting the volume that we have in months and years past that makes it worth the time and investment,” says Erickson. “My bigg...

The City of Sundance is expecting to receive a chunk of funding through the American Relief Fund (ARF), the second round of federal funding to assist communities and individuals in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Jokingly referred to as “Biden Bucks”, the distribution to cities and counties is set to include $200,000 for Sundance. “The City of Sundance will receive about $200,000, but in two payments,” Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz explained to the council. “You will get $100,000 after Jul...

Now that Wyoming has moved on to Phase II of the vaccination program, any person over the age of 18 may sign up for their doses. Walk-in vaccinations are still not available due...

  • Commissioners hold firm on fire restrictions

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 15, 2021

The county commissioners passed a motion last week to state that they will be supporting any decisions made by Fire Warden Doug Leis to enforce the fire restrictions now in place across the county. The commissioners made the decision after Leis reported getting requests for burn permits, despite the restrictions – something he is reluctant to grant under the circumstances. The commissioners had also heard from county residents on the matter. Leis explained his reluctance as unwillingness to set a precedence. “If we start issuing these permits,...

Karla Greaser of Trihydro said she can see no concerns with providing water in that area thanks to the work done on the city water system. The council meanwhile commented that development will be good for the growth of the town. At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the counc...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 15, 2021

The county commissioners are moving ahead with a socioeconomic study that focuses on the impact of natural resources on the health of Crook County. The study will be added to the current natural resource management plan as a supplement addressing the impact that the county’s three top industries of timber, minerals and agriculture have on growth and economic stability. Making use of a new state program to perform the study was suggested in March by Commissioner Jeanne Whalen in direct response to the potential for the U.S. Forest Service to m...

  • Rates set for city franchise agreements

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 15, 2021

Having already decided to institute franchise agreements with utility companies that operate in the city, the Sundance Council settled on an exact percentage last week. Utilities will be asked to enter into agreements that allow “rental” of city rights-of-way in exchange for 2% of gross operating revenue within city limits. Franchise agreements allow utilities to make use of city-owned rights-of-way to install the necessary equipment to serve their customers. Such agreements have long existed in Sundance but, for the most part, were pay...

  • Legislative Update

    Ogden Driskill, Senator|Apr 15, 2021

A quick update on the session. I will follow with more in-depth information in future releases. We finished our session on April 7. It has been both a productive session as well as a frustrating one. This portion of the session began with a virtual session early and committee meetings being held virtually prior to this session. That led to a very compact session that was challenging and fast moving. It ended up with a budget being passed by both bodies and signed into law by the Governor. The...

Nate Perez, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Apr 15, 2021

CASPER — President Joe Biden responded to a wave of gun violence throughout the country by announcing executive actions Thursday to curb the growth of homemade “ghost guns” and 3D-printed firearms without serial numbers, and require stabilizing braces to be subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act. In response, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, Sens. John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis and Gov. Mark Gordon made statements strongly supporting the Second Amendment. “The Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms...

  • Yellowstone grizzly population jumps with count revision

Mike Koshmrl, Jackson Hole Daily Via Wyoming News Exchange|Apr 15, 2021

JACKSON — Federal scientists who track grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are revising a key criterion that underlies how they count bears, with the effect being a 34% to 43% jump in the population estimate. The change brings the estimated population from 727 grizzlies up to more than 1000 animals. The protocol used to count grizzlies — called the Chao 2 method — is staying the same, continuing a method that’s been used since 2007. What’s changing is a filter that determines how many female grizzlies with cubs get plugged i...

  • City now able to buy back unused cemetery plots

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 15, 2021

If you own an unused plot within Sundance’s cemeteries, the city is now able to purchase it back from you at the same price you paid to acquire it. Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz requested permission for this venture at last week’s council meeting, explaining that it is not uncommon for people to purchase plots and then find they no longer need them. This can happen, for example, because family members move away or because alternative decisions are made about burial arrangements. This has never been...
