  • Ready, set... hunt

    Apr 13, 2023

The annual Easter egg hunt at the Beulah community center attracted more than a few avid treasure hunters this year, with kids ranging from one week to 84 years old hoping to fill their baskets from the 1500 that were hidden. Hostesses Sherry Speed Haiar, Melissa Speed McCarty and Corinne Hoard made treats galore, while Lund Valley Farms provided a baby Nigerian dwarf goat for snuggles and the bunny himself, with the help of Jeff Bright, made an appearance....

  • City secures more ARPA funds

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 13, 2023

The Sundance City Council has successfully tapped into an additional infusion of $30 million into the state’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) fund for water and sewer grants. The city last week secured funding approval from the State Lands and Investments Board (SLIB) for one of the remaining two applications on its wishlist. The funding will be used to update the only block on Ryan Street that still has old waterlines and reconnect three existing water service lines, at a cost of $195,157. However, the final stage of the Old Stoney r...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 13, 2023

If higbee’s Café is not fully demolished within the next month, the City of Sundance intends to do the work itself and bill the owners for the cost. City Attorney Mark Hughes said during last week’s regular council meeting that he has been in touch with the lawyer for Darlene and Jason Coder and, “Let them know that the city is losing patience.” Hughes told the council that he informed the lawyer that, sooner or later, the city will tear that building down and send them the bill. The lawyer was apologetic, he said, and demolition work did start...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 13, 2023

After moving to Sundance from Idaho a couple of years ago, veteran Phil Colozzi quickly noticed that the town no longer had an American Legion Post. Believing that this support network for local veterans is an important part of a community, Colozzi has taken it upon himself to revive Legion Post #45 and is reaching out to find potential members to help him rebuild. A town in one of the most patriotic states in the nation deserves its own American Legion post, he says. “This is the fifteenth city my wife and I have lived in the past 60 years a...

As spring finally puts in an appearance, the City of Sundance is gearing up for the season ahead. Several projects are on the agenda, including replacing the roof at City Hall and fixing a sizeable water leak. Public Works Director Mac Erickson alerted the council at last week’s meeting to the issue with the roof at City Hall. According to Erickson, the insurance adjustors concluded there was no damage to the roof after a big hail storm. However, the contractors who came in to fix the roof said the opposite. It became clear that the insurance c...

  • Commission approves short-term rentals for subdivision

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 13, 2023

A group of landowners in the Pine Ridge area of the county are interested in renting out their properties to vacationers for short periods – but were unable to do so without the consent of the Crook County Commissioners. The reason for this is that a subdivision’s covenants can only be changed with commissioner approval. As explained County Attorney Joe Baron, this is done deliberately to make sure that the language of the covenants makes them binding. “Basically, covenants are worthless in any subdivision if the developer can go in and chang...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 13, 2023

Jeff Waliezer of Black Thunder explained that the company had not received any notice of these taxes until a bill arrived with a ‘past due’ penalty. For the last few years, the City of Sundance has issued a free trash coupon to each of its utility customers. Originally, the city hosted a single “free landfill day” each year.
