  • Hoax puts schools into lockdown

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

A hoax caller claimed there was an active shooter inside Sundance High School on Monday morning, prompting a lockdown and a call to action for Crook County Sheriff’s Office. But as deputies responded, the Sheriff’s Office was already aware that the threat was unlikely to be real. “As my office notified me of a threatening call to the Sundance High school, I had just read messages to me from multiple sheriffs across the state that they had received similar calls and had already classified them as swatting,” says Sheriff Jeff Hodge. Swattin...

  • Crook County among fastest-growing in Wyoming

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

Crook County’s recent population growth is considerably higher than the state and national averages, according to new data released by the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information’s Economic Analysis Division. Between July of 2021 and 2022, Crook County saw a 1.8% increase in its population – as compared to a 0.4% increase nationwide and 0.3% in Wyoming. While 16 of Wyoming’s counties saw population increases during that time, Crook County’s rate was beaten only by Lincoln County’s 2.4% (and was matched by 1.8% in Big Horn County)....

  • Black Hills wildlife fared better than in much of Wyoming this winter

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

The Black Hills region appears to have escaped the more severe levels of wildlife mortality that have affected much of Wyoming this winter. The Wyoming Game & Fish Department has announced that active monitoring of the big game across the state has shown increased mortality due to the increased snowfall and extreme temperatures over the last few months. "Wyoming is used to tough winters, but it has been a while since we have had a winter where severe conditions were so widespread across the...

1 Years Ago April 12, 1923 A pleasant surprise party was tendered Miss Grace Zimmerschied Friday evening, it being her birthday. Forty-three of her schoolmates were present and the surprise was a complete success. Workmen started Tuesday to remove the fence surrounding the courthouse. The fence has served its time and with a city stock ordinance, it is no longer needed. The result is a great improvement in the appearance of the grounds. The expected carload of machinery for the Belle Fourche...

As boating enthusiasts gear up for the summer, so too do the Wyoming Game & Fish Department’s ongoing efforts to make sure that zebra mussels do not find their way into Wyoming waters. Game & Fish is now offering training for the public on how to perform inspections for these and other aquatic invasive species (AIS), offering the necessary skills to inspect your own and other watercraft. “Aquatic invasive species can have far-reaching impacts on Wyoming water resources for agriculture, municipalities and wildlife. Many of these invasive spe...

  • Bats now officially classified as endangered species

The northern long-eared bat is now officially listed as “endangered”. The implementation of this upgrade to the bat’s status was originally set to take place on January 30. However, this was delayed until the end of March to address concerns over the impact that the listing might have on infrastructure projects across the bat’s territory. The delay, according to an announcement from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) in the Federal Register, “Is necessary for the Service to finalize conservation tools and guidance documents to avoid con...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

I was explaining to a friend the other day that being English in these parts has turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. The curse comes with the fact that, even now, I find myself using the wrong words or going about things in an unconventional manner and this can sometimes cause confusion that takes a while to properly unravel. I’ll still ask a grocery store attendant to put my bags in the boot of my car before my brain has a chance to do the translation, for example, and I still won’t o...

  • Weary

Dave Jagemann, Pastor, Chapel of Faith|Apr 6, 2023

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9 We all have been tired and exhausted or soon will be. Weariness is a state of being that although is not uncommon, is never intended to be a set position in life. This condition goes much deeper than just being physical. It is that which has the capability to steal hope and gut the soul. This leads to weakness and produces vulnerability. The Apostle Paul encourages a continuing in doing good with the realization that in Jesus Chris...

  • Utility moves away from coal

Nicole Pollack, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Apr 6, 2023

CASPER – Wyoming’s largest utility doesn’t see much coal in its future. By 2030, only two of Rocky Mountain Power’s 11 Wyoming coal-burning units will remain, according to the biennial Integrated Resource Plan it filed Friday with state regulators. It plans to convert a handful of others to run on natural gas — and keep those gas units open until some combination of renewables, storage and advanced nuclear becomes established enough to take their place. The utility has opted to preserve coal use at one Glenrock unit for an extra 12 years, bu...
