    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 3, 2022

A national award for a school employee in Newcastle provided the occasion for Governor Mark Gordon to make a trip to northeast Wyoming last week, but also gave him the chance to do some multi-tasking. Before heading south to recognize Keeley Anderson, paraprofessional at Newcastle Middle School, as the 2022 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees national awardee, the governor made time on Wednesday morning to visit the Hulett School with Wyoming's new Superintendent of Public Instruction, Brian...

Newly minted Superintendent of Public Instruction Brian Schroeder is throwing his support behind a bill that is slowly making its way through the legislative process. A staunch proponent of childhood literacy, he believes Senate File 32 is vital to ensuring that all Wyoming’s kids have the chance to succeed. “It will require the districts to put screeners and assessments in place so that they can detect dyslexia and other learning disabilities or reading deficiencies early on,” he says of the bill, titled “K-3 reading assessment and interve...

Its mid-morning Monday and I am racing to meet this week’s paper deadline. We have had a crazy busy two weeks of session – now starting the third week at a run. We are finishing the last of the Senate files this morning. Major bills we have heard to date: • SF 1 Budget of the State of Wyoming – this bill has passed the Senate and House and will go to a conference committee. As a whole the bill went smoothly and I expect that the differences will be worked out easily. It was a frugal budget...

  • Unemployment still trending down

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 3, 2022

Unemployment continues to trend downwards across Wyoming, including in Crook County. The latest figures from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services show the unemployment rates to have ticked down another small notch, from 1.9% in November to 1.8% in December. It’s a tiny improvement in itself, but a continuation of the positive trend that has seen unemployment here halve since the same time last year. In December, 2020, at the height of the pandemic, 3.5% of the Crook County population was unemployed. Crook County continues to have one o...

  • Crossover bill crosses chambers

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 3, 2022

Most of the legislation aimed at reforming the election process in Wyoming has failed to make it past the halfway point of this year’s budget session. However, one bill that would make a significant change to how citizens of this state cast their ballots passed out of the Senate on Monday morning. Senate File 97 would end “crossover voting” in Wyoming, a practice in which voters have historically had the option to switch their party affiliation right up until the moment they are handed a ballot. The bill was introduced by Senator Bo Bitem...

CHEYENNE — Attempts were made in both chambers of the Wyoming Legislature on Friday to amend the 2023-24 biennium budget to expand Medicaid coverage to more than 20,000 residents without health insurance. Both failed. In the Senate, amendment author Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander, tried to appeal to his colleagues by sharing his own emotional experience without health care almost a decade ago. He said he lost his business in his divorce, and, with it, his health insurance. In the same year, he found out he had stage-three melanoma cancer, and the m...
