Students gathered for a brief assembly at Sundance Elementary School last week to honor one of their own for being a finalist in the Wyoming Agriculture in the Classroom bookmark award. Of the 13 finalists chosen from second to fifth graders all around the state for the award, an impressive five were from right here in Crook County. The students of SES celebrated one of these finalists, Keva Rasmussen, who was unable to attend the formal award presentation in Cheyenne during the summer....

  • ID wristbands come to Winterfest

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 26, 2023

If you fancy the idea of wandering around the Sundance Winter Festival with a beer in hand, you may be interested to take part in a new wristband program that's being introduced this year. Partly intended to make sure alcohol is not served to under 21s and partly to streamline the process for businesses selling alcoholic drinks, the program is courtesy of Crook County Prevention and the modest price tag for each wristband will also help to offset the costs of hosting the popular snow event. It's a 30-second process, explains Katie Allen,...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 26, 2023

On Superbowl Sunday, you can support the kids of your community by braving the chill of the early morning air. This year's Freeze Your Fanny will be taking place on February 12, complete with a hearty breakfast, door prizes and, of course, four miles of frigid fun. "Freeze Your Fanny is a four-mile fun run/walk and pancake breakfast. • Letter to the Editor

    Jan 26, 2023

Dear Editor, We need revenue for our counties’ bills. Medicaid expansion could help us. We have sixteen Critical Access Hospitals in Wyoming. Crook County has a crucial Critical Access Hospital. Medicaid expansion is not a freebie giveaway. Medicaid expansion could keep hospitals’ doors open by helping to pay hospitals’ uncollectible debt. Since Montana passed Medicaid expansion not one Critical Access Hospital has had to close. Our counties need revenue. House Bill 80 is commonly referred to as Medicaid expansion. Please ask your legis...

  • Weekly update

    Ogden Driskill, Wyoming Senate President|Jan 26, 2023

As you may have seen on FOX News and other major media outlets, Wyoming experienced quite a week in the national news spotlight due to a resolution brought forward in the Senate. Senate Joint Resolution SJ0004 Phasing out new electric vehicle sales by 2035 pushes back against bans on new sales of cars with internal combustion engines in states like California and New York. Although it’s a bit of a tongue-in-cheek statement – and not an actual ban – I am pleased to see that this resolution struc...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 26, 2023

Wasn’t that a fun bout of flu that’s been making its way round town? I’d almost forgotten about normal coughs and sneezes that don’t have anything to do with a pandemic but, as it turns out, I’d have been fine with them staying away. The only positive outcome of shivering under a blanket for the better part of a week was that I made an exciting new discovery. Well, it was new to me, at least. For the last decade, I’ve worn ear plugs to ensure I get a decent amount of sleep. Once I’m fully under,...

  • Gillette woman's quest to educate residents on the presence and dangers of radon

Jake Goodrick, Gillette News Record Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jan 26, 2023

GILLETTE — Gail Heath had a chronic cough that just wouldn’t go away. It started in the winter of 2020. For anyone sick at that time, there were a number of reasons to be concerned or, at the very least, hyper-aware of even the slightest coughs and chest pains. The Gillette woman, now 75 years old, has always lived a healthy life. She was never a smoker and always mindful of her diet and supplements, yet the coughing hung around until the spring before finally going away. When the cough returned the next winter, it became clear that it was som...

  • Long-term funding for suicide prevention lifeline removed

Jasmine Hall, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jan 26, 2023

CHEYENNE — The 988 suicide lifeline bill was stripped on Friday of its $40 million appropriation to create a long-term trust fund, as well as the $6 million for a trust fund reserve account. The change was adopted in an amendment brought forward by Rep. Landon Brown, R-Cheyenne. His new language removed the trust fund and directed the Wyoming Department of Health to request an appropriation to fund the suicide prevention system in its next budget request. Brown told lawmakers on the House floor that while the state was sitting on a strong c...

  • Panel proposes $5M for housing

Mary Steurer, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jan 26, 2023

CASPER — Urged to do something about the state’s lagging housing stock, a legislative committee voted last Tuesday to set aside $5 million for a new infrastructure grant. The grant, which would be funded by Wyoming’s remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) relief money, is a kind of counter-offer to one of Gov. Mark Gordon’s December budget proposals. In a letter to the Joint Appropriations Committee, Gordon originally asked for $15 million in relief money for unmet housing needs. The plan, at the time, was to use the funds to create a grant...
